Steam Loco
Posted by MarkZitz on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 7:40 PM

I am looking for a small n-scale loco with a preinstalled decoder.  Something like a 4-4-0.  Does anyone know of who might make one?

Thanks

Mark,

In general, you're pretty limited on steam when it comes to N-scale...but it is getting better.  Model Power and Bachmann do have a version.  Not sure of the quality or how well they run.  Both probably come in DC-version only.

Athearn made a 4-4-0 in the past couple of years ago in HO.  I haven't seen an N-scale version though.

I did a search for you, but I cannot find any DCC-equipped N scale steamers out there, at least not factory installed.

Bachmann makes a 4-6-0 with a decoder. Make sure you buy the second run as the first run had a few bugs. These run very well and are Spectrum models.

Model Power has a nice 4-4-0. It does not come with a decoder, but a decoder can be installed VERY easily in the tender. Its just a matter of connecting four wires.....Mike

Bachmann has a 4-4-0 but not in DCC. The motor in the tender and not a very good runner. Drives the loco through a drive shaft.

There is an assortment of larger N scale DCC equipped locos out there at some on line shops. I just checked some I deal with.

The Model Power is also a tender drive like the Bachmann.

Below is what the Bachmann 4-6-0 looks like inside. Scroll down to N scale.

Rich, The Model Power 4-4-0 is not a tender powered locomotive. The Motor is in the boiler of the Loco .

here is a very handy list of just about every locomotive ever made in N scale.  This will answer a whole lot of questions about each locomotives quality.....Mike
