Using Digitrax SDH164D Decoder
Posted by wdcrvr on Saturday, November 26, 2011 10:28 PM

I have been looking at the Bachmann Spectrum ALCO 4-4-0 DCC locomotives and the Bachmann Spectrum 0-6-0 DCC locomotives.  Sometimes I can find one pretty cheap online.  And seeing that the SDH164D can be had for about $40 I am wondering if it would be worth the effort to buy either of these locos and replace the installed decoder with the SDH164D to get a DCC SOUND loco.

I am sure that I will get a lot of responses saying to just buy a loco with sound already installed, but I am a man of meager finances.  Also, although I have seen 4-4-0 available with sound, I have not seen the 0-6-0 with sound.

All advice and comments are welcome.

Please be kind, I am a newbie.

If you look back through the forum, you'll find several comments from users who are of the opinion that the Digitrax decoders have very weak sound when compared to other brands.

But if you're running only one sound equipped loco on a small layout, it may be loud enough to suit you.

The only way to know for sure is to install one and see if you like it, because your ears are the only ones that can determine if the sound suits your needs..
