Atlas Silver.........adding DCC, Sound?
Posted by Bluegill1 on Monday, November 14, 2011 8:11 PM

I've added the MRC DCC/Sound drop in decoder to my Walthers Proto 1000 engines relatively easy.

Is the Atlas Silver series manufactured with the same intent as Walthers Proto 1000 series? meaning that a DCC/Sound decoder can be easily "dropped in"?

Or does it require some modifications?

If so, what decoder is made for the Silver Series?

Where can it be purchased?

Any one have any expiereance in adding DCC/Sound to the Silver series?

I'm looking at Atlas Silver Series GP38's, 40's.

Thanks,

David

Soundtraxx makes the AT format for Atlas locos.     The only thing I'm not sure of is the speakers for those models.  They may have that "teepee" or angled two speaker set up where you can use flat round 1.22" speakers.   In that case it will be pretty easy and sound great.

They do have the "teepee" speaker setup.  The silver series comes with a couple of weights in the teepee that are removed to place the speakers.  It is my understanding that the aftermarket board is a little different size than the OEM.

The Atlas style board won't fit with the A-frame speaker tower.

You basically have two options - Use the Atlas style board, scrap the A-frame enclosure and install a rectangular speaker / enclosure OR get one of the hardwired decoders and a pair of speakers to fit the A-frame enclosure.

IF you are going to install two speakers in the A-frame, be sure to get 4 ohm speakers and wire them in series for the proper 8 ohm load for the Tsunami decoder. Two 8 ohm speakers in series won't have as good a sound volume-wise, and wiring two 8 ohm speakers in parallel will stress the audio amp's output.
