Bachmann decoder not responding
Posted by rrlcommish on Sunday, October 30, 2011 11:00 PM

Recenetly purchased a used Bachmann RF-16 with factory-installed DCC.  I cannot get the loco to respond at all on my layout.  I am using a Digitrax DCS 50 (Zephyr) system.  I am fairly certain the decoder must at least be somewhat working as I was able to read back the address on my programming track (reads factory default of 03).   The gentleman assured me the loco works, so before I take it back to him and accuse him of selling me a broken loco, what other things could be wrong/what should I check for?  Thanks!

You can always try performing a factory reset of the decoder.

The decoder used by Bachmann is made by Lenz.  The command to reset the decoder to factory defaults for other Lenz decoders is CV 8 = 33, but I don't know if that is the value to program into CV 8 to reset the Bachmann decoder.  Try it and see.  You can't cause any harm if that is not the correct value to reset it.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the input, resetting both of those CVs did the trick.  And David, I know the guy from our local model railroad club, my "accusation" was strictly tongue-in-cheek.  Sorry it did not come across that way.

And I would recommend to replace the Bachmann DCC decoder.
