locomotives that run on both dcc and dc layouts

Can anyone recommend any HO locomotives that will run on both dc or dcc layouts without any modification?

Any current factory DCC equipped or DCC/Sound equipped locomotive will run on both DC and DCC without any modification.

In fact you would be hard pressed to find one that would not run in both environments.

If you are installing decoders yourself, all current model decoders can run on DC or DCC.

If you install your own, make sure the decoders support this (some older ones don't).  Then you have to check the CV's and make sure you're set for DC operation.  I think it's CV29 that does this, but can't remember what the setting has to be.

But yeah, if you get the newer releases, they're set up for "dual mode" right out of the box.

Any modern locomotive can do both. DCC locomotives usually run fine on DC layouts, and DC locomotives can run on DCC layouts if the address is set to "00". However, I believe that running a locomotive on 00 will make the layout like a DC layout, controlling all the trains, though I havent tried it yet.

A DC loco can run on a DCC layout with "00" as the address.  But since the only address to run DC loco's is "00", you can only run one DC loco independently.  All your other DCC locos will run as DCC locos.  The only problem with running a DC loco on a DCC layout is the loco will "sing" when it is idle.  The faster it runs, the quieter the "singing" gets.  It is not recommended to let your DC locos idle on a DCC layout.

On 00 all DC locomotives on 'live' track will operate at the same time while the DCC locomotives will be unaffected.

But the constant voltage doesn't take as long to ruin the motor...  I don't recommend running analog locomotives on DCC.

And MRC Prodigy, for one, doesn't support 00 operation at all.

NCE DCC controllers do not support 00 operation either. If all else fails, follow the instructions in the system manual. All DCC manufactures have a web site with all the manuals.
