Finding Bachmann parts for a motor...
Posted by KevinsHope on Monday, April 11, 2011 12:50 AM

Hello all,

So I made it a week without asking any annoying questions! LOL I had to hold myself back a few times.  However, I have no alternitive today. My brother gave me this bachmann that he thought that he had brunt the motor up in.  However, inspection of the motor and testing revealed that the motor is fine, though missing some critical parts.  On the old bachmann spectrum motors ( in this case for a pre-DCC sd45), there is a little copper cover over the motor brush housings and that copper cover is gone, as well as the spring that secures the motor brush to the motor pickups.  I have looked everywhere for parts.  I can't find them.  All I need is a spring and that little copper cover and I'm back in business with this loco. Can you guys point the way to a solution?

Do you have a similar motor lying around from which you could canibalise the parts?  I had a similar situation with a mashima motor I was installing in an old brass model, and I was able to use the brushings from a burnt-out open frame motor to replace the mashima ones.

Failing that, it may be simpler to contact Bachmann and ask for a complete replacement motor.

Hope this helps,

tbdanny

Contact Bachmann customer service via their web site.   I needed an obscure part for one of my son's old Spectrum N scale locos.   Their parts department were able to find the needed part in the scrap bin.   They were incredibly quick and responsive to my question.   I ended up having to email them a picture of what I was looking for as my description was not all that good.

If they don't have the part, then really you have 2 other choices, replace the motor completely, or fabricate your own fix.

As a last resort, you may be able to use a different brand of motor from a source such as NWSL if you can determine the original's exact size specifications.

Here is the link to the SD45 motor from Bachmann With flywheels $18.00 plus about $5.00 shipping.

I just bought a motor and drive belt for a Decapod yesterday. Bachmann's web site has changed since the last time I was on it. And finding and buying parts from their web site is a breeze now. Just got email parts are being picked & shipped.
