This is a simple answer for a simpleton - me -
I am reading about decoders and see the term "dual mode". What does that mean?????? I know what a 2 or 4 function decoder means but------ Am I the only person that does not understand this terminology?
"Dual-mode" basically refers to a decoder that will have it's full set of abilities available when used with DCC, and will at least run, without burning up, on DC power.

To me it means an engine able to operate dual mode will run on an analog DC system or DCC. Example, I have a number of Bachmann steamers (HO) and the latest ones come with a decoder installed and they are dual mode.
Someone else will have to go into how the other brands of decoders work if set up this way. I went over to DCC about 3 years ago so all my old DC stuff has been converted.

A "dual mode" decoder detects whether the a DCC signal is present in the rail current and allows the locomotive to operate on either DC or DCC.
