Posted by froggy on Saturday, March 26, 2011 10:16 PM

I have NCE PowerCab and I need to reprogram a Kato union Pacific N scale loco. What I hate about it is, it won't move untill I get to the higher number. like 50.I would like it to start moving about 3-4. Can somebody geive me the steps when I program the loco? When it says the acceleration number what should it Be?How can I get it to move sooner?

Hi froggy,

I'm assuming you are still trying to program that MRC sound decoder?

What you are going to need to do is adjust CV2 (Vstart) and CV5 (Vmax).  CV2 adjusts the amount of voltage to your locomotive when it is at speed step 001.  The higher the value entered into CV2; the more voltage that is applied.  You'll need to play around with the values to find the optimum setting for your locomotive.

Ideally, what you want to happen is for your Pacific to just start moving at speed step 001 or 002.  This can be accomplished in POM or Programming on the Main mode.  To enter POM mode on the Power Cab: Press the PROG/ESC button then the ENTER button then follow the prompts.  This is also described in your Power Cab manual.

Adjusting CV5 (Vmax) is done pretty much the same way.  Depending on what value you enter for CV6 will determine the maximum speed your Pacific will achieve at speed step 126.  (Or 28, if you are using 28 speed steps.)  Some decoders also allow you to adjust CV6 (Vmid) or your mid-range speed; others don't.

froggy, just give it a try and see what happens.  And make sure you write down what you've done.  You can always reset the decoder if you get yourself into a jam.

Hope that helps...

Tom

That's very unusual for a Kato product.  Have you properly lubricated the mechanism and checked to make sure there is no binding of the drive shafts?
