New to DCC
Posted by MarkZitz on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 9:58 PM

Hi,

I am reasonably new to DCC and I have what may be a dumb question.  I have a section of track that I would like to be able to turn on and off with the DCC.  I used insulated joiners.  How should I control this?

Thanks,

Mark

Not a dumb question at all.  I could think of several ways to do this, but probably the most straight forward is to use a DCC Specialties PowerShield X circuit breaker.  They can be turned on or off using a DCC accessory address.

If you just want to manually turn the power on and off for an insulated section of track, use a toggle switch. You only have to break one wire, so even a single pole single throw toggle will work. Exactly the same as DC wiring.

I have a couple of these.

They are wired in parallel with the switch that controls the siding.  When the switch is thrown to the siding, the siding is powered.  When the switch is closed the siding is not powered.

You can do the same thing with a Tortoise switch machine using the built in relays.
