I have an Athearn HO AC440 DCC and would like to install a decoder in it. Has anyone out there done an install on one?

Yes.   Some of how you do it will depend on the decoder and if you're going to install sound.     Basically take the unit apart see how it's put together and then look at the various formats and sizes of boards.      It also depends if your version has the motor isolated and if the electrical pick up from the trucks are routed through wires or tabs/frame.    Mine was the later and I had to solder wires to each side of both trucks and cut back the tabs.    Those were brought together to the decoder red and black wires.    The power pick up is really important as you don't want the wires to interfere with truck movement.
