Tsunami in Athearn MP15AC?
Posted by Hergy on Monday, January 31, 2011 11:09 AM

Does anybody know if all the MP15AC' sound equipped locos used Tsunamis??? I'm thinking some of the earlier runs may have used (ugh) MRC decoders.

I think you're right.  I have an SD unit with an MRC decoder as well as a Challenger.     The SD unit was probably made in 2008, possibly later.   I got an MP15AC early to mid last year and it was Tsunami.    I put a larger speaker with better enclosure(using body sides) and wow does it sound great now.    The Athearn speaker and install wasn't very good.     I also reconfigured the board to regular Soundtraxx function assignments.     From the two MRC/ Athearn sound decoders I have it seems that they are custom made for Athearn.  When  you program them using Decoder Pro, the definitions are specific to that Athearn unit.

If you're looking at one in your local hobby shop, the end of the box will indicate if it has a Tsunami decoder in it.  If there is no such statement on the box, then it's an older MRC decoder.

If you're looking online and the seller doesn't indicate which decoder is in it, look elsewhere.

The MP15AC came out right about the time of the Tsunami.  At least the first run didn't have them.  As noted earlier do some checking before buying.
