Does anyone know why an NCE DA SR decoder will run fine on DCC but not DC?
I put one of these into an atlas rs 3, one of the classic mkt series, but it would not go on dc. The motor and drive shaft would barely move at almost full throttle. My DC pack is an MRC Sound and Power 7000.
I tried a second thinking it was bad but same result so I thought what the heck powered up the Power Cab DCC and everything works like it should. Lights come on in the right direction and all.
Would I ever have a need for DC on this loco if I don't run DC?

Check the value in CV29. Automatic DC conversion may be turned off which will cause the loco to sit dead on DC track. If it's never going to run on DC anyway, leave it set this way - it can help prevent runaways that sometimes happen if the track power comes on before the command station sends valid DCC packets - the decoder can potentially see this as DC and take off. WIth the automatic conversion turned off in CV29 this can't happen.

if it is truly a dual mode decoder (I see no indication in their literature that it is), it's possible that the DC compatibility was shut off (either at the factory, or by yourself) inadvertently.

Thanks that is what I suspected. I'm going to figure out all this DCC stuff eventually. The learning curve for us electronically challenged is steeper than I thought it would be. I did figure out the lights though.

Don't fret. I also have an older DASR that will not do DC. I don't run DC either but the clubs layout was DC before the big conversion to DCC. Some decoders work good on DC but there are a few that do not like it at all. TCS decoders are very good on DC if you still run on it.

According to the NCE documentation for the DA-SR decoder it is DC capable, at least the newest version. If you have a very old DA-SR it's possible that it does not support DC operation.
Try configuring CV 29 to a value of 6 if you're running on a short address, or 38 for a long address, to enable DC conversion.
