Sound issue with Paragon 2 SW-7
Posted by Graffen on Friday, September 3, 2010 5:37 PM

Hi all, I have a problem with a BLI Paragon 2 SW-7 I got a few weeks ago. It has a very loud static noise that is very annoying.
I have contacted the service department of BLI and they authorized that I sent it back for a service repair, BUT; the insured shipping from Sweden to USA is almost $140!!! Obviously you need a shipping contract to get "normal" rates.....
It´s however more than the locomotive costs....
Has anyone any experience with this sound problem?
Could it be the speaker? Or maybe some component that is picking up static?
I have a few clips of it on Youtube, it isn´t so loud there but it is still audible.

It would be nice to get some help with this problem. Best regards; Michael

Turning the volume down sometimes corrects this problem -- if it's too loud it tends to overload the speaker.  The volume can be turned down by resetting a CV.  The documentation that came with the locomotive should tell you which CV is the Master Volume and the default value.  Individual sounds can be turned louder if need be.

Is that the same effect as lowering the volume by double tapping F8? Because when I lower the volume that way the static is the same...

I actually tried to lower the master volume but nothing happened?!? I don´t have such great knowledge about these Paragon decoders....

I understand that they respond best with "Direct programming" as that is what I had to use on my programmer to change the adress of the loco.

I would hate to conclude that it is faulty......

One of my AC6000's had the same problem. In that case the speakers picked up some metal bits from the track.  A brushing off fixed it.  If that doesn't fix the problem try doing a reset to factory default.  After that I'd look at the speaker.

Good Luck

Was it like this right out of the box or did it start sometime later?

Unfortunately it was like this from the start, I will try to replace the speaker tomorrow and see what happens.

I didn´t care to replace the speaker just now, when removing the speaker it had a big crease in it.... Probably the cause for the static or what?!?

I have mailed the BLI service dpt. and asked for a replacement.

I have had extremely good luck with dealing with Broadway Ltd. Even with equipment that was well out of warranty.

You can also join the BLI forums and ask there. Do a Google search for BLI  forums.

I had thesame problem with my BLI 6000.It sounded great for a few weeks then develope that staic irritatating sound.Factory reset did nothing. They are set very loud out of the box.BLI sent me a new speaker but have not had time to mess with it.But I did change the cv value so it is not nearly as loud and the static is not as bad but still their.Over all the paragon sound is the best I have heard and the loco runs great. This is the only BLI lococ that I have that has done this. Will report back if I ever replace the speaker and what that does. Thanks BOB
