Sound Decoder & Turboliner Questions
Posted by modelmaker51 on Saturday, July 24, 2010 7:26 AM

Is there anything out there that could be used for the turboliners  What do the Athearn Gas-Turbines sound like and could that be used?

EDIT: I have listened to the Athearn Gas Turbine sound and it is not right for the Turboliner, however the Rapido Turbotrain is very similar, see my next post.

Sound Decoders & Turboliner Questions
Posted by modelmaker51 on Monday, July 26, 2010 4:42 PM

Someone suggested the decoders from the Rapido Turbotrain, so I popped off an email to Jason at Rapido:

"I have 5 car Jouef Amtrack Turboliner for which I have changed out all the wheels in the unpowered cars (to get rid of the pizza cutters) and powered the center club car with a Kato drive and it runs very nicely, but there's no sound. After hearing your Turbotrain with its sound, the Turboliner is a bit dissapointing.

Is it possible to purchase a couple of your Turbotrain decoders with sound and install them in my Turboliner? I would assume I would need two, one for each "power" car (I don't want to run a pair of wires down the length of the train for the second speaker). The actual powered club car would have its own non-sound decoder, (or would it also have to be a sound decoder so it syncs up with the sound decoders?). I am aware that you have to have to have a load connected to the decoder while programming it.

If the decoders aren't available, are the sound files available or could you load a couple of Tsunami sound decoders for me?

I would really appreciate any information you could provide, best regards, Jay."

His answer:

"Hi Jay,

We can provide you with a complete set of decoders and speakers for theTurbo. The cost will be $100. Let me know if you are interested and we'll email you an electronic invoice. As for wiring them up, that may be tricky. Our decoders are both connected to motors and power trucks. I would suggest doing the same thing - have two powered units. It will make the wiring easier. The Turbo operation is completely different from the FP9, so we could not swap sounds between decoders. I'm sure there are ways to use both decoders and only one motorized unit, but I'm not sure how. You would have to fool one of the decoders into thinking it was powering a motor and power truck.

Best regards, Jason"

Now to any DCC experts out there, I have read elsewhere, of people using decoders without motors, (although a load is needed to program the decoders), but I don't remember whether they were used for just the lights or sound as well.

Would the decoders need feedback from the motors to operate the sound correctly or are they just dependant on the motor output voltage from the decoder? Or if they need a load, would a properly rated lightbulb (load) suffice? And does the decoder running the drive need to be a sound decoder because of the higher start up voltage etc. of sound decoders?

Btw, I forgot to ask Jason, does anyone know who made the decoders for the Turbotrain?

Try Ulrich Models web site. They have some videos of the Athearn, but I think Steve has installed a QSI decoder.

None working link, you will need to do a copy and paste.

Thanks Ken, I've now listened to both the Athearn gas-turbine and Rapidos Turbotrain and the Turbotrain sounds almost exactly like what I remember the Turboliner sounded like. I just need some help with the technical issues.

Jay, I don't know if this will help you, but Steve does sound file down loads. He might be able to get what you are looking for.
