Hi,
Today as I made the final adjustments on my helix before putting back the DCC system a small metal angle fell and of course hit the PROCAB and right on the display, breaking it. The system still works perfectly I just have problems reading the display. I guess I'm not the first who ever broke one of these things and I see that the NCE website says that they cost 25$ to replace. So that is not a huge problem.
But my question is this. Has anyone here done that? That is replacing the display. It looks like there is just a couple of tabs to remove and press back to do it. But I would love to hear if anyone here tried it and how easy/hard it is to do. I hate paying 60 bucks in shipping for a 25$ repair since I live in Sweden!
Thanks,
Magnus
I've never had to replace the display, but I have had to open up a ProCab to solder the antenna jack back onto the circuit board and have seen how things are assembled. A do-it-yourself display replacement should be very easy to accomplish.
Many displays like this one just plug into a PC board.
I have the NCE Power Cab which has a similar design. I took mine apart and you can see how the display plugs in. One one end of the front view I am quite sure you can see the DC power connection for back lighting the display. I suspect this has two contacts the press up against each other.
The rear view shows the data connector and twist devices to hold the display in place on the PC board.
MAYBE, NCE will send you just the display because of your location but the responsibility would rest with you for proper replacement.

If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.
Thanks for the info and the pics. I spoke to a Mr Larsen at NCE since I decided to call the instead. EXCELLENT service. They wanted me to ship it back to them, but since shipping is much much more then the LCD's displays they agreed to ship them replacement to me. I already tried removing the old one now and reinstalled it while I wait for the replacement. IT is VERY easy. A chimp can do it, which is lucky since my skill level is there about.
So what started as a minor disaster with my self kicking my self for not moving this small item before releasing a screw instead ended up learning me how to replace a LCD display AND it cost me 0 , ZERO dollars.
So thanks guys and the good people at NCE.
OOPS. Wrong info.
I straitened the twists and here is what the display looks like. It is a serial connection. This is all you need but not sure you could find this off the shelf. If they send only the two wire display, it would be an easy fix.
The PC board on mine does not disconnect. Might be soldered though. I did not want to damage my controller by trying to separate the boards.
Thanks for even more info, and pics. I really do apreciate the effort. So thanks a LOT.
Apparently they've used three different types of LCD displays. That is the only problem, knowing which one they should send. So they are gonna send two of them since they talked me through how to look for the one it wasn't. So all I need to do is replace the glass. A 2 minute fix. Amazing.
It's great when a company treats you like this. Shipping parts to Sweden for free when it is clearly my fault.
Once more thanks for the help and the pics. Much appreciated.
Always great to see a good customer service story. Good work NCE.

Try to do a series of pictures and post them with the info NCE gave you.
The fellows in the Yahoo NCE DCC Group would like them also. That group has a photos page you can upload photos directly without using a photo editing site.

I have posted the photos I took there also.
Great idea. I will do so when I get the replacement parts and make a how to instruction as well. Prefect for the next guy who does something stupid like this!
Wasn't stupid, it was an accident. These things happen.

Yeah I know. I was kind of kidding. But partially it was stupid. I could have moved it away seeing how there was about a one in a million shot of this happening. :)
