Regular (NON-Sound) Decoder for Athearn GP40X
Posted by TheNc50 on Friday, July 2, 2010 10:21 PM

I need a decoder that will fit in an Athearn GP40X, no sound.  Anybody had a decoder that fit well with good lighting features???

Pretty much any decoder with the 9-pin JST plug will work.  I have some NCE D13SRJ's (4 fuctions) in my GP40X's but I'm going to switch them out with TCS T1 decoders (2 functions), I need the 4 function decoders for other locos.

The Athearn GP40X board can also take an 8-pin decoder, TCS DP2X (2 functions) will be a good choice if you want to go this route.  If you use an 8-pin decoder, take out the dummy plug that comes installed at the factory. Only use a 9-pin or 8-pin decoder, don't install two decoders at the same time.

Digitrax, Lenz also have 9-pin JST decoders, so your options are plentiful.

A TCS T-1 will plug right in in about 2 seconds. If you need extra functions for ditch lights and beacons then a TCS T-6 will als plug right in but have extra function connections to add those extra lights. The TCS decoders work equally well with LEDs and incandescent lamps for the lighting effects as well.
