sd 70 circuit board
Posted by Roadie on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 12:06 AM

Just got a sd 70  Genesis and would like to put sound in it There is a 165d Decoder in it now my question is do I need to change out the circuit board or can I install sound in it with the existing circuit board?

If it already has a 165D then you can replace the 165D with a sound decoder that has a 9 pin plug.  Examples are: Digitrax SDH164D or  QSI U decoders.

Don't the 165 series have soundbug docking connetors?

I personally didn't care for this setup, but your mileage may vary.

Yes, the 165 series has the Soundbug connection, however there is no 165D (the D models are standard decoders with wires/plug). There's a 123D and a 163D.

You are right about their not being a 165D.  If it is actually a DH165IP, then he can use the same sound  decoders mentioned above with a 9 to 8 pin medium plug adapter.  I never really saw the market for the DH165IP decoders, since they don't have the Soundbug socket on them.  The main advantage over the 163IP decoders is the SoundFX support to make programming an additional sound decoder easier.

I used the Soundtraxx Tsunami as it is virtually a direct replacement for the board in the Genesis SD70. T

Agreed.  Digitrax and QSI also make direct replacements too but I thought the goal was to not have to remove the board and to use the DCC plug ?

A QSI Revolution U will plug right in - but I strongly recommend using the Revolution A board replacement istead. It fits better and leaves more room for the speaker and enclosure. For motor only I think it's silly to spend more on an Athearn/Atlas format board when a plain 9 pin decoder just plugs right in, but when going with sound you need all available space to use the biggest speaker and enclosure for the best sound, so the board repalcement makes more sense.

Yep.  I've done sound upgrades both ways (leaving the existing board and repalcing it).  If you have the space, leaving it is a bit less work.  I'd lump Kato into the same category as Atlas and Athearn, with regards to upgrades.  They have standard medium plugs also.
