Can't Program Loco's to DCC
Posted by Eagle71 on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 3:13 AM

G'day folks,

I am currently running a NCE DCC Power Cab system. No dramas with it.

Bought a Proto 2000 series FA2/FAB locos to run on the set. Item 30209 L&N 306/203 w/o dynamic brakes.

Placed the train on the tracks for programming and it made a high pitching sound, before I could get to program it. Unsure of what to do, is it drawing to much power or is there something I have missed.

The bos says it's DCC and it's all wired up, seems the NCE system is not picking up the decoder for the locos.

Anyhelp is appreciated.

The high pitched whine suggests there is no decoder installed.

The best thing to do is remove the shell and look. There probably will be a light board with a resistor and a few diodes, with a decoder attached to it or just the decoder.

If you are not sure about these things take it to someone who knows about DCC.

Now, does the box explicitly state it has a decoder installed, or does it say "DCC Ready". If it says "DCC Ready", that means it does not have a decoder installed, but it has the capability of being converted to DCC easily. Many locomotives are advertised as "DCC Ready" for that reason, and they usually cost about less than the DCC decoder equipped version.

Sounds to me like there is no decoder installed.

A quick google search on that part number reveals that this was not a set with factory installed decoders, in fact with P2K as far as I recall they were either non-dcc with varying levels of DCC readiness or DCC with sound.  I don't think they sold DCC non sound variants of the models.   Anyway, for sure your set left the factory without a decoder, and it does not sound like anyone installed one since.  Did you enjoy the Cricket Sunday?  Agreed.  Hopefully you didn't pay DCC installed price.  Also make sure the box doesn't say DCC ready.  That means the motor is isolated but a decoder is not installed.  Most modern loco's have an 8 or 9 pin plug for a DCC decoder.   Removing the shell should tell the story quickly.
