I'm getting close to my new layout build to where I'm looking into JMRI now. I know you can use it for programming decoders. But I was reading the information about how you can use JMRI for your operations. I'm interested in that. I don't want to control the trains with the computer, but I would like to use it for generating manifests.
Who uses JMRI for there operations? I was looking into getting RailOp for this, but since JMRI has this, for free? Why pay for RailOp.
There is a separate application I see for Panel Pro Am I missing something? Is it still free?
I just downloaded and installed it.
Thanks,

Mike,
I am not aware of any 'Operations' addition to the JMRI package. BTW, Panel Pro is included in the free download. I think you are thinking that 'configuring operations' is a waybill/switch list generator.

Jim,
Under the help sections under Panel Pro, I found an Operations section here:
Link
Doing some browing/searching in the JMRI yahoo group, it looks like this is a new module that was just recently added in Feb. So why wonder, Jim, didn't know about this.
This is really cool, I've been playing around with the demo mode for Operations, and it's exactly what I was looking for!
And it's FREE!!!
Its interesting. The location stuff is bassackwards the way its organized, but that's not that horrible.
Real railroads organize things by:
Division-Subdivision-Station-Track-Spot
Every industry is at a "station" and trains serve stations. One station can have hundreds of tracks and industries. The industry or spot is the base geography in this application and it doesn't look like there is a way to aggregate up.
I'll have to play with it to see what the car distribution capabilities are.

The Operations part of the program was introduced in Version 2.4 (Dec. 2008).
PanelPro, DecoderPro, Operations and more are included in the JMRI suite and are all free to use under a GNU General Public License
For the Ops demo, you have to load the demo files from the (Menu) Operations, Settings, load demo files. Then you can see how they setup the Locations, Cars, and Scheduling.
I'm really liking this, they even have staging setup for inbound/outbound trains.
Dang, I really need to finish my layout now, I'm itching to run operations!!!
I use Decoder Pro in operations. I have a Digitrax system and the money I spent for a PR3 allows me to use my computer with Decoder Pro as multiple throttles, for less than the cost of another Digitrax throttle.
