Wire size for NCE Switch-It?
Posted by GMILL47 on Sunday, March 28, 2010 9:18 AM

I know about wire size for the track wiring but what size wire is used for the connetion to the Tortoise and the push buttons.  I don't see the information in the on line manual.  Do I run 14 ga. for those as well?

You can get by with much smaller gauge wire for the pushbuttons and Tortoise connections because these wires will be carrying very low Amperage.  I used 26 gauge stranded speaker wire from one of the big box stores and could have gotten by with an even smaller gauge.  Telephone wire would be sufficient.

I used 22 gauge wire  to the torti's simply because it was what I had available at the time. There is very little current so unless you're traveling long distance the 26 wire mentioned earlier is fine.

Since Tortoises only draw a few milliamps, you can use just about any kind of wire, even phone wire. #18 is probably about as big as will fit in the hole to solder to the Tortoise, but you don't need anythign near that big, 22-24-26 will all work just fine with a Tortoise, even with a fairly large distance between the Switch-It and Tortoise.

Thanks for the posts.  Seems to be a consensus here.  Best Wishes
