decoder for intermountain ac-12
Posted by nik_n_dad on Monday, February 15, 2010 5:19 PM

We just got one of these today. The tender has a 10-pin socket, and we're not sure what decoder to install (the intermountain documentation is a bit thin).

Anyone else have one yet or know what decoder this takes?

Thanks in advance

A 10-pin socket?  Intermountain must be using something different than any other manufacturer.  The NMRA standard socket is 8 pins in two rows of 4; a JST socket has 9 pins in a single row; and a European socket used by ESU has someting like 24 pins in 2 rows.

What scale ? ?  I don't have one and don't know whether it's HO or N.  I think a SoundTraxx Tsunami is the only sound decoder that has true AC-12 sounds.

If you don't want sound, then any decoder with a matching plug (probably a JST 9-pin header) will suffice; i.e., Digitrax, TCS, NCE, Lenz, etc.

There's no doubt a dummy plug presently installed into the socket, which has to be removed in order to install a decoder.

Look at the pictures on the various decoder manufacturer's web sites and find a plug that looks like the one in your loco.

Yeah- it's 10 pins, 2 rows of 5. It's n-scale. After chatting with the folks at NCE & Digitrax, they both believe that any decoder NMRA medium socket with 8 pins will work. (The shorting plug only has 8 pins) Not sure what the other 2 pins are. thanks
