Athearn Genesis Challenger disassembly procedure
Posted by siderod on Monday, February 8, 2010 4:31 PM

Hello everyone,

I have an Athearn Challenger and I need to remove at least the top half of the boiler.  I have removed the screw from under the dome but I suspect there is probably another one lurking under the cab which I haven't figured out how to remove safely as yet.  I'm presuming the smoke box cover, number boards and bell bracket will need to come off as well.  Does anybody have any experience at this?  I would hate to break or crack something while trying to wrestle these parts off.  Would truly appreciate any advice anyone may have.

Thanks!

Jack

A quick E mail to Athearn may get you an exploded parts breakdown. They are usually good about things like that.  I did a friends Berk awhile back and the exploded view was a great help. There was a few grabs that needed to come off and that was the toughest part.

I pray every day I break even, Cause I can really use the money!

I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

Hey Pete,

Ha-Haa!  What a cutie pie!  Your going to be spending most of your time chasing away the boys I'm afraid.  Congratulations on that little precious grandbaby.

Thanks for the tip on contacting Athearn for an exploded view.  I thought about trying them but figured it would take a month of Sundays to get a response.  But I'll give em a try anyway.

Thanks again,

Jack
