Mini Plugs
Posted by wholeman on Friday, January 8, 2010 9:08 PM

I have used 2 pin mini plugs to connect a speaker in a loco.  I am going to hard wire some decoders in a couple of my locos and was wondering if a mini plug would be good to connect the power pick up wires from the trucks to the wires on the decoder.  Is this a good idea?

I like to completely remove the trucks and give them a thorough cleaning whenever I service the locos.

The simple answer is YES you can use mini plugs for track pick-up to your decoder...     Generally, if you are wiring decoders in a steam locomotive you need to transfer power and/or lighting between the tender and the locomotive...  Mini plugs allow you to take the two units apart when ever you desire...

Thank You for the response.

Do you know of an online store that sells a variety of these?  The last set I got was from Ulrich Models.  I am also looking for 1 pin plugs so I can use them for only connect/disconnecting a single wire that will fit in a loco.

You can try either one of these two, All electronics how ever is hit or miss some times but Micormark definitely carries them as I've purchased them myself. I especially like to use them for the lighting connections as I hate having the loco shell tethered to the chassis of I want to do some work on it.

Just my 2 cents worth, I spent the rest on trains. If you choked a Smurf what color would he turn?

Hello.

I recently did this on a P2K GP30 sound decoder install......I bought the wrong type of decoder......Tsunami AT-1000 instead of a TSU-1000.....but I made it work......I used the mini plugs from soundtraxx so the decoder is completely removable from the loco...also I used the two pin mini plug so the body shell can be removed also.
