Has anyone used the smail machines? Wondering how they compare to using a regular tortiose with a separate decoder from another company. Seems like it would be much easier to install (less wiring) and also program/address the machine.
Thanks, Captain Mike from Ct.
I've not used it, and the Circuitron website does not seem to show a picture of it. However, according to the website information (http://www.circuitron.com/index_files/Smail.htm) the Smail incorporates "proven and reliable NCE Switch-It decoder technology on the Smail circuit board". Based on this I would think that programming of the Smail would be similar to the Switch-It.
You still need two wires to go from the track power to the Smail, but maybe the two wires from the decoder to the Tortoise are eliminated. From what I can see, there is really not much gained, but again I don't know what the Smail assembly looks like. So then it comes down to a cost comparison of buying the Tortoise and decoder of choice separately versus buying the convenience package.
Just my opinion based on limited information.

I've given up on Tortoises. Sure they are a quality product, but the price has risen sharply int he past couple of years. They're up to $19.95 list now. No thanks. RC servos can be had for under $4. Yes the controller costs more, but for $18.95 I can get a DCC controller that also has pushbuttons and LED indicators with a servo.
