I just got an Athearn N scale SD70M and I need to install a MRC DCC/Sound decoder. Can someone tell me how to get the shell off? I think I can see tabs on the front and rear underside but do I need to remove the couplers?

You do not need to remove the couplers. The shell should just lift off. There are no tabs holding it on, the only thing holding it is dimples on the sides of the frame that fit in depressions on the inside of shell.
