Posted by Diesel do on Thursday, October 15, 2009 2:37 AM

I have just received a new Kato AC 4400  loco and have an MRC drop in decoder how does the shell come off the loco I don't want to get too ham fisted with it so any help is appreciated

mine just pulls off vertically, all that does the locating are some small  pin head sized bumps  that locate into dents .  but it is a tight fit.  this was one of the first ones out quite a few years ago so things may have changed, i fitted a digitrax drop in decoder

Thanks for the info the shell came off easily but the MRC decoder seems to be just a bit too high as the shell cant clip back down it sits high at the rear of the loco as if the shell is resting on the circuit board. I will win though there are other decoders for this unit, not impressed with MRC.

Not sure if you resolved this or not but you will need to pop out the exhaust stack and sand down the mount for it (on the inside of the shell). One of the chips hits it and will not let you seat the shell fully to the frame I did this and just put a drop of lock tight 412 to hold it on (412 does not cause the plastic to frost up).

Thanks for your reply, yes I found out that the exhaust does get in the way and as you suggest I filed it flat and reattached the stack. But I will still replace the MRC chip with a Digitrax it's on order now.
