Digitrax PR3 - clarification?
Posted by tbdanny on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 6:05 PM

Hi,

I'm considering buying a Digitrax PR3, to use with JMRI to maintain/program my locomotives.  My DCC system is Lenz.  The manufacturer's website is a bit unclear, and my question is this; can the PR3 be used as a standalone programmer for reading/writing CVs, and does it require a power supply to do so?  All it seems to say on the website is that it interfaces with Digitrax loconet.  And does it have any issues with Soundtraxx DSD-90 series decoders?

Thanks in advance,

Danny

The PR3 does need a power supply for something but i'm not sure for what. It's on the digitrax website. I'm planning to get one of them myself and already have a power supply for it.

 Danny,

The PR3 has two modes:  "MS100" mode, in which it acts as an interface between a computer and the LocoNet, and PR3 mode, in which it acts as a stand-alone programmer.  The two modes are completely independent, and it can be switched between the two at will.

You are correct in that it requires a power supply to be used as a stand-alone programmer (PR3 mode).  Digitrax recommends their PS14, but any similar DC power supply, up to 20v DC according to their Tech Depot, will work.  I use an old, "Tony's PS12 generic equivalent" with mine.

I don't have any DSD-90's, but I have used my PR3 with a Soundtraxx AT100LC and it worked fine.

Steve

I've got a PR2, the model before the PR3.  I've also got a Lenz DCC system.

Yes, it needs a power supply.  I use an old MRC unit.

You can use it to program CVs in most decoders.  However, you can only download Digitrax "sound projects" to Digitrax sound decoders.  Other sound files for other brands of downloadable sound decoders require their own brand of programming units.  To my knowledge, nobody makes a unit that will download sounds to all brands of decoders.

Thank you for all your replies.  Just one other question - what current rating is required on the power supply?  I have an old 'Wall Wart' that I could use, but it's only rated to 500mA.

That will be fine.  Just make sure it is DC with the center pin positive.  Don't try to use an AC walwart.
