DCC sound issues
Posted by ktop on Monday, September 7, 2009 5:50 PM

I have a SD45-2 Genesis 6 months old.  I use a Digitrax Zypher.  The engine has been running great  until today.  The sound coming from the engine sounds like a circus, on numerous buttons it gives a chirpy type sound.  And the bell button makes the horn go.  And many of the other buttons are not working properly.  I tried resetting the decoder with CV8 and 8, but it wouldn't restet the decoder.  Does anybody have any idea how to fix this problem?  Thanks for your help.

Remove the MRC sound decoder that is in the Genesis and replace it with something better.  In case you haven't been following the discussions here about MRC sound decoders, they are well know to have many problems like the ones you have described.

The MRC sound decoders definitely aren't worth the money and aggravation. There are better decoders out there that have much better sound and don't die at the drop of a hat.

..I tried resetting the decoder with CV8 and 8...
Programming CV 8 to 8 is not a universal reset procedure, it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. For MRC sound decoders you program CV125 to 1.

Thanks alot for all the help.  How do I turn off the sound until I get a new sound decoder?  The 0 button won't work, can I just remove the sound decoder and have it run normally? Thanks.

 A: Remove Body shell

B: Remove MRC sound decoder & Speaker

C: Place MRC sound decoder & Speaker on floor

D: Stop on MRC sound decoder with at least size 11 workboot or similar object of size and weight

E: Take digital picture of MRC sound decoder in it's new & Improved state and as suggested to me make it your screen saver just incase you have a brain fart and think about buying another one.

F: Go to LHS or favorite internet train store and buy  Tsunami, QSI, Soundtraxx or any other sound decoder of your choice

G: When new decoder come in mail try to overcome the urge kiss and hug the UPS man as he's delivering your salvation.

H. Install new sound decoder and body shell, place on track and listen! you will never hear garbage like you did before.

I: Repeat steps for second SD40-2

Have a nice day

Just my 2 cents worth, I spent the rest on trains. If you choked a Smurf what color would he turn?
