Trix Big Boy with sound
Posted by Railcon44 on Thursday, August 20, 2009 11:02 AM

Hello to everyone.

I'm back. Railcon44 here. I have a Trix Big Boy with Dcc and sound. I don't care for the sound and the functions they installed. I think i should not have to do to much with the speaker in the tender except to check to make sure the resistor is the right one with the new sound decoder i install. That sound about right?  Has anyone done a trix big boy and could you recommend a good sound decoder. Would sure appreciate anyone that could help.

There's no resistor between the decoder and speaker, but there might be a capacitor, depending on the chosen decoder.

I believe Trix used an early version of the LokSound decoder which uses a 100 Ohm speaker.  A Soundtraxx Tsunami would be a good choice for changing out the decoder, but you'll also need to change the speaker to an 8 Ohm version.

If it does have a Loksound decoder you might try Ulrich Models.

I have a 3.5 Loksound in my PCM Big Boy and I am very happy with the sound. Steve can custom down load Big Boy sound files to the 3.5 version at no extra charge.

Thanks again everyone for all the help. I emailed Steve at Ulrich models and we both agree that the QSI decoder would be the right way to go. So i'll send it to him sometime in late September cause he is really back up doing Athrean upgrades.

Thanks again

Railcon, tell Steve Ken said HI. He went out his way to help me with mine. Why did he think the QSI would be better?

 Hello Ken,

Steve sent me a link with the new Qsi challenger and Big Boy sound files, I listen to them and thought they sounded pretty nice and Steve thought it was a good choice and match and will have 2 speakers in the tender instead of 1. By the way, like the picture of that car you have. I had a 71 Charger with the 440 that i re-worked to give it a healthy 500 hp. Wish i would of kept it. I miss working on them old ones.

Glad you like my 69 Charger, 440 with a 6-71. OK, you don't like the functions, far as sound the 2 speakers would help the Loksound a lot.

Could you post the link to the QSI?
