How do you keep the sound from turning on when powering up the layout? I mute the sound with F8, power the layout off but when powering on again the sound is on. I've looked througn the manual and Decoder Pro and can't can't get the sound to stay off.

I mute my LokSound decoders if I am not going to use them. When I power up next session, they will make noise, but they go silent within about two seconds.

Mine will do that too if I leave it selected on one of my throttles (Digitrax) when I power down and power up. If I have deleted it from a throttle before powering down it will not shut down in a few seconds after powering up. I have to select it again and then mute.

Like I said, I'm just guessing. But I have a QSI diesel decoder which has a function where you double push one button, and the engine goes to a lower idle, and then if you double push it again the engine goes through a shutdown followed by some sounds where the engineer leaves the cab and slams the cab door behind him. Then there's another button you have to push to get the engine started. I'm sort of assuming that if the engine (decoder) remembers that it was shut down prior to the power being off, it will remember that it's off the next time power is applied and not start until you do the starting sequence. Maybe the loc-sound doesn't have this sequence, or maybe it doesn't work like I think it does. Just trying to be helpful.

Thanks for your reply. I too have several QSI's and they do have a nice shut down procedure. But I have not yet been able to find something similar for LokSound. I really don't like the LokSound manual and have great difficulty figuring out how to do things. QSI manuals are so much better.

Someone shared this solution on the forum a year or so ago and it worked like a charm on my PCM F3. Here's the Muting Startup Sequence for Loksound decoders: [Default]
The sound will come on initially for 1-2 seconds than go mute.
Jerry, it's a good thing that you asked this today because I ran across the little sheet I had written the above down on when I was cleaning off my work bench last night. Let me know if this works for you.

Thanks. That seems to work. The double press of F8 to adjust sound volume doesn't work after making these changes but that's okay as I would rather keep the sound from coming on when I power up.
I can't make heads or tails of why these changes work when looking at the manual. I'm thinking about making a phone call to LokSound next week to see if someone can help me better understand the basics of understanding their manual. I can't help but think it's not as hard as I'm making it.

You're right, Jerry. I hadn't noticed that before. Somehow the change in the CVs alters that.

Jerry, I have two DT400's. On the one I run the extended addresses and on the other the 'short' addresses. I don't always have my one remaining Loksound engine, the PCM Y6b, on any of the two throttoes, but I still get the two-second burst and then silence no matter what. I don't recall programming all those CV's that Tom mentions...in fact I am quite certain I have never done so, and yet mine seems to work as described.

Thanks. I will look up your post. My QSIs also have the F8 shut down which keeps the sound off on power up. I also use the three-phase shut down procedure as I like the abiltily to leave a loco on a low volume idle while waiting on a siding, or to do a complete shut down.
I phoned LokSound tech support this morning and got some helpful information. Rather than ask them to try to give me a tutorial over the phone, I decided to request a solution to the F8 mute question and then try to follow their logic to see if I can better understand their procedures.
They emailed me three different options to try. I haven't tried them yet but will when I get the time. The email is rather lengthy so rather than post it here I would be happy to email it to anyone interested.
The sound options emailed to me by LokSound work very well.
Option 1: F8 turns sound on and off with no sound on power up.
Option 2: F0 turns sound on and off with no sound on power up. This works nice where you can just turn sound on and off anytime you turn the lights on and off.
Option 3: F8 turns sound on and off with sound coming on at power up but only for a few seconds (if you turned sound off before powering down). F0 turns lights on and off and does not affect sound. Double press of F8 while sound is on allows 4 sound volume adjustments.
I kind of like Option 3 as I like the ability to adjust volume with F8.
