Three-way splitter for Digitrax Loconet daisy chaining
Posted by Isambard on Thursday, June 18, 2009 4:42 PM

We have a number of UP5 panel installed on the inner side of our layout modules where both UP5 rear receptacles are occupied by incoming and ongoing cables i.e. daisy chained.

At the same time we have  UP5's on the outer side of the modules tee'd (daisy chained) to the inner UP5's by plugging the loconet cable into the side mounted RJ12 receptacle of the inner UP5's.

We understand that the UP5's side mounted RJ12 receptacle is a third throttle position additional to the two on the UP5 panel front. We now also understand that it is not a good practice to daisy chain devices using throttle receptacles rather than the rear receptacles, as signals to/from downstream devices may be corrupted.

We are therefore looking for three-way splitters to plug into the UP5 rear receptacles so that we can daisy chain both left and right and tee to the outside UP'5's. So far we have not found six-pin RJ12 splitters at local electronics stores, if available ( four-pin RJ12 and eight-pin RJ45 splitters yes, but that doesn't help us).

Perhaps we're going to have to lash up some terminal boards?

Comments appreciated. Smile

Why do you need more loconet receptacles if each up5 has two on the front. If you need more of them you can use 6 pin modular telephone receptacles and splice them into the loconet cables. They can be obtained at online electronics outlets.

Loy's Toys used to have a 6-way splitter, but Loy has retired and sold the business. I don't knwo if they new owner is actually sellign new items or just clearing otu the leftovers, but you might want to search for that.

Thanks Randy. We found RJ12 six pin/conductors straight through splitters at The Source (six pins in, six pins out of each receptacle), not to be confused with usual six pin three pair conductors telcom splitters.
