Atlas/Kato Alco RS-1 decoder in nscale
Posted by mcfunkeymonkey on Sunday, May 17, 2009 12:53 AM

Found the above engine (letter for SP&S in my dad's box of 20yr+ train goodies.  Made in 1988 & still runs awesome! (DC)

I'm starting up in DCC (will be going with NCE powercab) and was wondering best way to turn it into DCC.  Best decoder for it, any instillation tricks, etc.

Thanks for yr help!

with an rs1 of that age you have to have the frame milled to allow a decoder to fit. aztec mfg co mills the frames that you send them. you have to disassemble the loco and just send them the frame halves. the decoder will have to be a z scale decoder such as digitrax dz125 or dz143. and must be wired in.

Seems like Aztec & dz143 is the way to go.
Thanks!

Mark, if it's an Atlas/Kato the TCS CN-GP should work. Take a look at the installation pictures on the TCS website. I have the CN and CN-GP installed in various late 80s Atlas/Kato engines and it's a nice decoder.
