circuitron snapper ... any care to comment?
Posted by ranchero on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 3:47 PM

I went to my hobby shop today and was telling the owner about the lack of "ooomph" the ac terminal from my MRC powerpack has. He told me that circuitron had a gadget jsut for that. upon researching a bit i found that it is quite similar ( if not exactly) a capacitor discharge unit. I was just wondering if anyone has used them, seen them used.

I used the Snapper on My n scale layout with great sucess . I used the peco switch motors on the switches & never had one fail. The Snapper used with a momentary pushbutton switch is how I ran Mine, less likely to burn a motor as the Snapper sends a certain amount of current to the motor & then has to reinergize itself before it will go again, it can also be used in conjunction with the Atlas motors if You want to use those in hidden places.  It IS a capacitor discharge unit. Pretty simple to build yourself, few components and not particularly delicate ones. But if you don;t have the inclinations, the Snapper seems to be a quality product.

my club has had problems throwing more than one peco switch at a time using an mrc pp. we switched to a hogger by starrtek but they are no longer being made. using push buttons could stick burning out switch coils. we purchased  a snapper and along with the hogger have no problems throwing a double ended crossover. if a button sticks the snapper will just discharge and not burn out the coils. it recharges very fast. we also did away with the push buttons and are using brass screws with a wand to throw the machines.
