Digitrax's new wireless
Posted by armchair on Friday, February 27, 2009 7:34 AM

I've read some forums that mention the release of a new wireless  Digitrax setup .What will be the difference between what They have now ? As usual I would assume it would be compatible with the other Digitraxx products ? Just curious as to what improvements could have been made.

armchair,

The new Digitrax wireless will be a duplex system vs. their current simplex offering.  I don't know more specifics than that.  I think you can pretty much rest assure that it's compatible with other Digitrax products.

The biggest difference is with the current wireless setup, you have to plug in the throttle to acquire a train. This will not be neccessary with the new system. It has also be said that the new throttle will control functions up to F28.

I doudt I'll ever need that many funtions but the not having to plug in at all feature, I like.

Here is what has been floating around on the Digitrax Yahoo group and other forums.

New throttle and a new radio receiver coming out.  It has been suggested that the throttle is called the DT402R and that it is essentially a DT400 throttle with duplex (2 way) radio and support for functions up to F28.  The receiver has been described as the UR92.  The system has been beta tested with some existing modular club layouts and is compatible with current Digitrax systems.  It will even work in the same environment as the current UR91/DT400r wireless solution. So both can be run side by side on the same layout.  I wrote to Digitrax last week to try and find out when it was going to be released and was told by tech support, sometime in the next 6-8 months.  To say the least I am disappointed about that time frame as this was being talked about in much detail at the NMRA show last summer.  Looks like the release date has slipped a year at least.  Too bad as I was looking to get this when it came out.

I had a chance to test Digitrax new duplex radio system last January at the West-Springfield Big E Train Show. As already mentioned by Tom, it is a Duplex (two way radio) system, which mean it is totally wireless, no need to plug in to acquired locos or make/break consist. This is irrelevant to me but seem important to some.

The new radio system will operate in the 2,4 GHz range instead of the current 900 GHz of the present simplex system. Therefore due to the different ranges the new system will only cohabit with the old system. This means it is impossible to use the actual DT400R with the new UR92 or the new DT402R with the UR91. However you can have both system plugged to Loconet simultaneously and they cohabit happily.

The DT402R is identical to the DT400R, only a tag with the mention "DT402R Two way radio" differentiate the two throttles. I was also told the radio part of the throttle is all debugged out and only the implementation of F13 to F28 was under further testing. When I asked when it would be available the Rep told me anywhere between Spring and Summer of 2009, no pricing was quoted.

My first impression of the two way radio was favorable even though I don't need it.

Simon, I don't currently use the Digitrax system, but They are more than likely doing extensive testing before releasing them. I, too thought they were coming out anytime now, guess we'll have to wait.

I have used Digitrax radio throttles for ten years.  I would like to get some of the new UT-4R throttles, but I am waiting for the duplex version.  I guess I will have to wait a little longer.
