DT400 Throttle Speed Cjange
Posted by 2021 on Thursday, February 5, 2009 6:21 PM

I recently bought a Digitrax DT400 throttle.  It works great and I'm very pleased with it.  However, I do not like to operate with the 128 step speed control.  In reading the manual, it shows how to change the speed steps to 28 steps by using the OPTN key.  This seemed very simple, but when I did it, the steps remained at 128 even though I changed the hex number in OP#2 from x23 to x20.  In reviewing the OP settings, the display shows x20 for speed steps which according to Table V is the correct value.

Any ideas on why I'm not operating on 28 steps?

That OPTN setting only changes what the throttle uses by default. To send 28 speed steps to the decoder you will have to status edit each address to use 28 speed steps so the command station sends 28 instead of 128. Which system do you have? OPTN SW 21,22, and 23 on the command station control the default speed steps - see the back of your manual about OPTN SW settings. Regardless of the speed steps being sent, the display on the DT400 will show 0-100. What's wrong with 128 speed steps? You have much finer control that way. If you don't want to turn the knob so many times, turn on the ballastic tracking so it behaves like your computer mouse - small movements are very precise but a quick turn will jump up or down quicker. Like your mouse, you can adjust the level of this to somethign that works best.

Randy, In answer to your question of running at 128 speed steps, I guess the easy answer is consistancy.  My UT4's are all 28 step and our club layout is 28 step.  Even if I run a loco at 28 step on my UT4 and switch it to the DT400 it will revert to 128 step.

Your right though, it is not a real big deal since I am on ballistic.  It's just a matter of consistancy from one throttle to another.  Maybe I should let my Grandson use the DT400 at straight line tracking since it would take longer to speed up and I could react quicker (just kidding).

Thanks for your thoughts, I figured if anyone knew the answer you would.
