A friend has a Life Like Y-6B equipped with a Tsunami sound decoder (i forgot the style) he wants to sell, and i want to buy. It's suppose to be able to run on DC (my little 5X12 layout doesn't warrant DCC), but when i tried it the sound was completely out of sync with the speed, and the engine doesn't run very fast, and it sounds like the whistle softly blows repeadiately like a warning. Is the're a way to fix it so it runs right (couldn't find anything on Soundtraxx's site), or do i just remove the decoder?
The decoder may not have been programmed to run on DC. Take it back to the person from whom you purchased it and have him reprogram CV 29 to a value of 6 and see if that solves some of the problems you're having.
You will not have control over many of the sounds on DC, though. A Tsunami decoder requires DCC to function properly.
ANd what makes you say a 5x12 layout doesn't warrant DCC? 5x12 isn't exactly tiny - and it is my contention that a smaller layout actually stands to gain more from DCC than a big one.

For me it doesn't since i have 83 engines (some of which i want to keep as DC), only 2 of which are dual mode. And i can only run 2 trains at once (on a dual main line). It's all about the money required. I haven't purchased the engine yet because of this problem (my only other sound equipped is a BLI SD-40-2).
In fact i'm still using horn hook couplers on half of my stuff
