Can I use 18 Gauge Speaker Wire With My Transformer
Posted by willjayna on Friday, January 30, 2009 12:50 PM

My current setup consists of 85 ft of power loc track two re-railers and one life like transformer. I have about 50 ft of 18 gauge speaker wire that has never been used. I was wanting to use the speaker wire to hook up my transformer to my two re-railers. Will this wire work? Thanks

Hi!  Your question sounds like it may pertain to hi-rail/O-gauge?  If so, it will get a better return in the Classic Toy Trains forum next door.  Let me know and I will move your question over there for you.

But, if it is O-Gauge, I would think the 18 gauge speaker wire would be good for feeders, not for a power bus.  Just my limited knowledge at work here, but you will get some answers.

#18 wire is fine, unless you plan to triple-head 1960's era catenary motors with two open frame juice hog traction motors per each.  It will certainly handle anything within the output capacity of your power pack.Cool

I own the aforementioned catenary motors.  One of them is an overload for your power pack!  Don't ask how I found out...Sign - Oops
