P1K RDC-2 and DCC+SOUND???
Posted by Trainman Sam on Friday, January 30, 2009 2:45 AM

I have spent the last oh, 45 minutes staring at this monitor looking at the search I did for RDC and DCC and SOUND, with nothing really of any service for me dated beyond early 2007...

I'm hoping that there is something out there that I just haven't found yet online, (i've tried digitrax but noone else yet, they will be my next stop.  Just thought I would drop a thread here to see if anyone new something?

I would like to install DCC and sound into the two RDC-2's that I just pruchased from Trainworld... I have found the Digitrax DCC decoders that they recomend, but have been unable to find sound?  Do they exist or are they still just a wishful glint in the backs of all us RDC fan's eyes???

Thanks,

Sam

Digitrax has a downloadable "sound project" for RDCs.  These can be downloaded to any Digitrax SFX series decoder.

You will need access to a PR2 or PR3 programming unit from Digitrax to program the decoder.

The SFX decoders, like the prototype RDCs, are quiet.  They don't have the maximum volume level you can get from other decoders.  Depending on how loud you like your trains, they may or may not work for you.

 Guys,

The prototype RDCs built by Budd "back in the day" came equipped with twin Detroit Diesel series 110 power plants (bored and restroked versions of the 71 series).  A 110 series equipped RDC sounded similar to a GMC "old-look" bus or tractor trailer truck with a deeper "growl".

A friend of mine recently installed sound in a P1K RDC. Remarkable job and the sound was impressive. He has a busy schedule, but I'll ask him to post on this thread when he has a chance.

Hi folks, I'm the friend AntonioFP45 is referring to. I used the Digitrax  SFX064D sound decoder with a Digitrax DZ123 mobile decoder. I used the enclosed 28mm speaker. I installed it in a spare 28mm ESU enclosure. The enclosure was mounted on the frame at the end opposite the seat cluster. The output volume is more than adequate; in fact it will produce volume louder than a standard OEM QSI decoder in the Proto RDC due to the sound chamber created by the body shell. Our in house passenger train guru at our club (works for CSX, previously with CN) was satisfied with the results.
