Digitrax radio throttle
Posted by billy21 on Saturday, December 13, 2008 2:46 PM

Probably a dumb question but what is the difference between the UT4 standard throttle and the UT4R raio throttle. Does the radio throttle mean it is tetherless or is it wireless. If it is wireless how does it communicate with command center.

Also has anyone tried the Bachman Dynamis DCC system. It says it is wireless infrared operration,is this the same as radio?

    Hope this isn't to confusing.

                                                                                        Thanks Kevin

Radio is elecromagnetic radiation.  Infrared is light in a wavelegth that the human eye cannot see.

Most TV remotes are infrared.  Infrared is line of sight.  The receiver must be able to see the led on the remote control.  Radio will work through walls.

The UT4 and DT400 throttles will work teathered, and if you have the sensor panel will work infrared.  If someone stands between you and the receiver, communication will be lost because the receiver cannot see the led.  The UT4R and DT400R are radio.

UT4 standard works tethered or tetherless if a UR90 infrared receiver is connected to the command station. UT4 communicates by infrared signal to the UR90. UR90 sends the command to the Command station. Infrared is line of sight although I've heard it will do some bouncing off of light colored, smooth surfaces.

UT4R communicates with the Command station via radio. It requires that a UR91 radio receiver be connected to the command station. UT4R can also communicate via infrared with a UR90 or be tethered to the command station.

Infra red and wireless communication is one way from the throttle to the receiver.  Digitrax will be releasing a two way radio system soon. When plugged in or tethered, all of their throttles have two way communication.
