Sound Decoder for a Proto GP38-2
Posted by Mainline913 on Sunday, November 23, 2008 1:11 PM

I am interested in modeling a couple of GP38-2s in leasing paint schemes. I have never owned any proto locomotives and I'm just wondering if anyone has found it easy to add DCC and Sound to the Proto GP38-2s? I know they come DCC ready, so I assume getting a decoder inside would be no problem but I'm unsure of how easy it would be to get a speaker inside the shell. Anyone out there added sound to one of these? If it is too much of a chore I may just go with one the new Atlas GP38s or GP40s with sound. I was thinking maybe I could save a few bucks by doing it myself.

I've installed into my engines ESU Loksound decoder, quite a few.

Here's my HowTo for GPs .

I never would have thought of that, and was really excited about doing the same thing for my units, but then I remembed I don't have dynamic brakes. Do you think the same trick would work with a smaller (maybe oval?) speaker? There won't be any holes on top for the sound to get out, though. Maybe I could drill holes in the smokestack bottoms...
