I got my PowerCab sysem today and tested it on my HO Russian Dec I'd installed a Digitrax decoder in. The system is everything I'd heard it was and more. Thanks to everyone who discussed the pros and cons of the various systems here.
Now, for the question. I have an HO Life-like 0-4-0 Dockside I'm considering installing a decoder in as well. This little loco is a very good runner for me on DC power. Has anyone installed a decoder in one of these? Is it as straight forward as the wiring under the shell suggests it is? The motor already appears to be isolated from the frame, and there's only four wires under there (two feeds for the motor and two feeds for the single light). Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
davidmbedardKeep in mind that with DCC, the locomotive wont run any better, actually, it will be more finiky.
Incorrect. If you use BEMF your locomotive will run better at slow speed PROVIDING you have good clean track work. (The bane of any DCC system running well).
BTW: Yes it is very simple. A cheap $10 decoder should do the job nicely. You will need to install a resistor to keep from burning out the lamp. (I believe it's 1.5 Volts)
And if you get the Lenz Gold with the Super Cap then you don't have to worry about dropouts with only 4 wheel pickup. Problem is that decoder is like $60. :-( That's a lot more than the engine.
BTW: Bowser offers a super detail kit and a valve gear kit. I believe it's compatible with the lifelike one. (I may be wrong.) You can call them and ask.

Hey David B, I hae opne of those bachmann 0-6-0s and it runs like a dream. Where's the link to your video on installing the decoder?

I have regeared an old 0-4-0 with 72 to 1 gears from NWSL. I also used a can motor and flywheel. Beautiful results. Yes, it cost more than the loco but I like the results.
Here is a link to a guy who does a lot with small locos including the older ones like yours. He also has a Yahoo Group which is quite active.
