GE 44 tonner decoder---beating a dead horse??? Different solutions/same question
Posted by markalan on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 10:29 PM

I'm going to put a Lok Sound into my 44 tonner. I put one in a Proto S3 a few months ago and it runs well, tho the horn, even at full volume is rather puny, but, I understand, that's Lok Sound.

Anyway, I've read the postings on putting in this decoder in the new, single motor, 44 tonner that I have. I've read that the board can be left in place if the coils and capacitors are removed. But, I also read David Bedard's note that seemed to indicate even that wasn't necessary. I'd planned to hard wire it like I did the S3 but I'm willing to go an easier route if it works.

Here are a couple of the quotes and their links:

I utilized the existing "board," removing the two capacitors and the two inductors (replaced with wires), to minimize the wiring bundle. TRNJ

I have not installed a decoder in my 44 ton yet. If you stay with the board, cut the capacitors off the PC board. All depends on the available space. Rich

No need to remove the old board. Just make a baffel that will fit the little speaker, paint it black and shove it into the cab. David B

Does anyone have further clarification/elaboration?

Thanks, Mark

HMMMMM.... I don't know what happened to all my paragraphs here Sorry, Mark

I edited my first post that came up with no paragraphs after I figured out I used Google Chrome instead of Firefox.  Chrome doesn't yet handle all the features for this site I guess.
