sound decoder
Posted by steamfreightboy on Monday, September 1, 2008 11:35 AM

I know I've had a lot of forums like this but I'm improving  my layout so I want it all done at once.

I have a proto 2000 E7 a,b w/ an 8 pin plugin.

I want to add sound.

Which decoder shold I get and any tips for instalation.

Thanks

Look into the new Soundtraxx Tsunami for Diesels. I haven't played with one, but I have installed the older DSD series into a Proto FA unit. Works OK, if you can hear it over the motor noise. Seems the motor controller in that decoder doesn't play nice with the OEM motor in the loco.

Remotoring will probably fix that. And it is not plug and play like they say. It may have been one day, in the past.

I installed a Tsunami in a steam locomotive, and it was a vast improvement over the OEM (MRC) decoder. New High Bass speakers were also a big improvement.

You might consider joining the Yahoo SoundTraxx group where there is discussion of the Tsunami diesel decoder.

I use Tsunami steam so I cannot comment on the diesel decoder. Even if you do not go with the Tsunami, you will know more about the decoder.

Any idea which genration E units those are.  There are at least three different variations.  I believe with an 8 pin plug it would be one of the middle or later ones.   Are both units powered or is one going to just carry the sound. A - powered, B - sound type arrangement?

Installation - the speaker(s) will be the hardest part.
I am guessing it will fit better if the existing electronics board (8 pin plug and all) is simply removed and work with the raw wires.
