? DCC for an older Proto FA
Posted by NYCentral1 on Saturday, July 26, 2008 2:34 AM

Ok, I have bought a DCC system and am ready to start putting decoders in my engines.  I have an older brown box Proto 2000 FA.  I opened the engine up and as far as I can tell there is no circuit board or plug or anything.  I don't know a lot about this.  I'm guessing I have to hard wire/solder a decoder in this unit then?

I'm wanting to put a Digitrax DH165 in this.  They have a 9 pin socket, so can I still use that for this engine?

Thanks for any help in advance.

If you're careful you remove the plug from the decoder harness by snipping the wires as close to the plug as you can. Then just strip the ends of the wires about a 1/4" and hardwire it into the loco. If you're feeling adventurous you can hardwire a socket into the loco and plug the decoder harness into it. Make sure the motor is properly isolated.
