PROTO 2000 STEAM DECODER ADVICE
Posted by TURKEY131 on Friday, May 2, 2008 12:39 PM

 http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/920-31783.

I have a Proto 0-6-0 it is a standered DC but us DCC ready with plug and play. I have never installed a decoder before and would like to put a decoder with sound in this locomotive. I am on a very tight budget and would only like to spend $50-$75.  Any advice on what decoder I shoud get and where to get it would be great! Thanks in advance.

This sounds like a really good question for the geeks on the Electronics and DCC Forum.  You might want to re-post it there.

Im afraid your budget will not alow a decent decoder for that critter. If you save up some more $$ a Tsunnami micro and QSI deep base speaker would be great. With shrink wrap, decoder, speaker around $125 give or take.

You're not going to find a good sound decoder for the price range you have set.  It may be possible to pick up a used MRC sound decoder for that price on e-Bay, but it's likely to be burned out, and MRC sound decoders have a bad reliability record.

Sorry to confuse you. It was early and I had not had the coffee yet. Tonys had an article on these not to long ago. QSI High Bass.
