dehusman All the HOGX cars were made from old MP 50 ft cars by Greenbrier. Look at MP 50 ft boxcars until you find ones that match the ends and roof, then get models of those and kitbash away. You'll be 100% prototypical.

Dave all the info I have read sais they were made out of old MP Pullman-Standard 60' box cars. The UP prototype is the only 50 footer from everything I have found.
mbinsewi Combatmp Heck even some closer pictures that I have.to show what the floors and other items were made of Well, if you have info and pictures of that, your set! Get "bashing" and keep us posted! I love this kind of stuff.! The louvered openings would be the biggest challange, as I see it. Mike.

Mike.
Well that was supposed to say closer pictures than I have lol. Auto correct in all its glory. I agree about the louvers Mike. Once I can come up with a couple dimensions Im thinking of making 3 or 4 with closed louvers and an equal amount open.

The louvers on the Overland model are part of the overall etching, and might be adjustable one time or they might break. It's relatively easy to draw them in a fixed position for 3D printing, but it was be way more cool if each "bay" could be adjusted in unison like the prototype. That gives me an idea...
UP still ran cabooses on some of their trains back then including UPs SLOAZ and CSLAZ trains which hauled the hogs. Most of the UP cabooses seemed to be the CA-10 and CA-11 type. In the early '90s it seemed like solid COFC and TOFC trains starting or terminating in the Los Angeles area used EOTDs.

Sorry I havent responded yet guys, I was just informed my question had actually posted. The HOGX cars are definately something I would like to add to my operations.
As I understand it the prototype that was lettered for UP was a converted 50' car and the actual HOGX cars were 60 footers.
I dont have an issue cutting up a 60'box car and turning it into one of these, but with a total lack of dimension other than 60' long Im not sure where to start. Anyone have a source for prototype drawings?
Ive been kitbashing and detailing rolling stock and motive power for a couple decades. Since we are in a rental till the kid graduates and leaves for basic (only a few more months lol) there is no layput currently just lots of custom work.
Thank you everyone for the welcome too. Ive been stalking for quite awhile just hadnt posted yet.

mbinsewi Yea, I know. I don't think there is anything out there that would be decent to start with, as a bash. Maybe a new style box car? and lots of hacking? Here what RRPicturesArchives has for pictures: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsList.aspx?id=HOGX&cid=29 Mike.

You could start with a 60' box car, just like the prototype did.

Hope the Cabooses were gone by then?
Riding behind Coal and Sulphur ( Dust ) was bad enough.
Thank You.
When I saw HOGX I immediately thought it was something Iowa related. You know, we have approximately 8 hogs for each resident of this state lol.

Yes, the rules are the rules. They were interesting cars. As far as I can tell only one carried UP reporting marks #80000 which was the prototype for the HOGX cars, which ran from 1989 to 1996 or 1997 when Farmer John switched to trucking the piggies from California's central valley.
Your right Bear. I went back and removed that question, so as not to lead to any unintentional promotion of his product, since he is new here, and maybe hasn't read through the rules on selling and promotion.
Thank you.
chaps, just be careful.
mbinsewiSo, Cap Designs, do you have a ball park price as to what these are going to cost? Mike.
No selling or advertising. That means no links or references of any kind to items or services for sale or auction.
I'd suggest using the PM function, if it still works.
Cheers, the Bear.

Welcome, both of you, as I see this is your first posts.
Interesting car! After I seen this, I had to search around and find out about the HOGX cars.
I read that the these were experimental cars for UP, and they ran them with intermodal trains, to get the quickest service, but was still not considered "animal freindly" enough, so it was discountinued.
Hi, I'm finishing CAD drawing for the HOGX car now. It will be an HO scale multi-media kit (or assembled and painted) with mostly 3D printed parts. I'm also working on a couple of other projects which all require custom decals which will be printed at the same time, so they should be ready before summer 2020.
Does anyone know of a source for drawings, or an article on modelling one of the HOGX cars Union Pacific ran from 89 till the mid 90s? I model the LA Subdivision in the late 80s so 4 or 5 new HOGX cars would fit in nicely. I know there is a brass model out there, but I enjoy detailing and kitbashing a lot more than buying a $300 stock car.
