I purchased some yellow Walthers SP passenger cars some time ago and I think they ran with the City of San Francisco.Am I correct ? Any help would would be greatly appreciated.

The SP was a partner in the Chicago - San Francisco 'Overland' market. There were multiple trains on that route and through cars many time were painted in the 'Cities' paint scheme...

I believe UP was quite insistent that all cars on it's passenger trains - even the ones operated jointly with other railroads - were decorated in the UP yellow and gray scheme. That's why, for example, the Milwaukee Road changed it's passenger paint scheme from it's traditional orange and maroon to UP's yellow and gray after UP trains began using the Milwaukee Road instead of C&NW between Chicago and Omaha in 1955.
As others have said, those cars where likely part of the joint SP-UP-CNW City Of San Francisco and other trains on that route.
Painting cars in another railroads scheme was not uncommon on jointly operated trains. I know for sure that the SP&S and CB&Q had cars painted in GN and NP paint for use on the Empire Builder and North Coast Limited respectively, as the two railroads operated sections of the larger, parent railroads big trains. The SP&S did even use some of the GN painted cars in other services without repainting them.

In the early years of the service there was a diesel set labeled for the three railroads that ran the route, SP-UP-CNW that also would have traveled the route wearing yellow colors.
I think the rule to have all the cars be yellow were loosened in the final years of the train, since there are plenty of photos showing later era City of San Francisco trains being hauled by Bloody Nose diesels, with a mix of SP silverish gray with red stripe cars mixed in with the UP Yellow colored cars.
Thank's for your input,Initially I thought SP might have had a train set in the yellow color that I was unaware of,and I did'nt want to pass on these cars since they they were 250 miles from home.

Walthers did do some yellow UP passenger cars a while back, I haven't seen any new announcements for them.
Someone in Our Module Club told me when any HO Scale Manufacturer releases a set of passenger cars or locomotives lettered for a certain road, it could be awhile before they repeat them again.
Yes,I was in San Jose when I found the first cars and at at a show for some others.I never saw any announcements for Walthers nor Athern regarding these cars.They are great looking cars.Thank you for respomding to my question.

Just to add to the yellow cars the Pennsy, Wabash and N&W also ran some yellow scheme cars.
