Super detailing a Santa Fe F3. Hoses, uncoupling bar, etc...?
Posted by Southwest Chief on Sunday, August 21, 2011 1:09 PM

I'm in the process of detailing my Athearn Genesis F3 ABBA.

I found a fantastic prototype color photo of the same loco (32LABC) in the exact era I'm modeling, 1957:

Here's the model (Just an ABA in this photo):

The Athearn model comes pretty well detailed already, but the lead unit has some omissions.  This is what I noticed on the prototype that is not on the model:

  • Hoses
  • Uncoupling bar
  • Coupler type?  Type H on prototype?
  • Horn (multichime cluster...not sure what kind)
  • Speed recorder
  • Missing pilot shroud under coupler
  • Different type of pilot plow...freight instead of passenger?
  • Cab sun shades
  • Silver headlight shroud
  • Large headlight reflector vs two bulbs

Hoses

I'm not sure what the different hoses are.  I'm guessing one is the airbrake line, another for steam heat, and another for the signal line.  But which is which?

What Walthers part numbers should I order (if applicable) for the appropriate hoses.  I'm guessing from; Details West, Details Associates, PSC, Cal Scale, etc...

Uncoupling Bar

Do any part manufactures make an uncoupling bar like the one in the photo?  If so, Walthers product number?

Horn

I know the Santa Fe added multichime horns to some of their F units in the 1950s.  Some were the Nathan M5 and others had the Leslie S5T.  What is the one in the prototype photo?  I'm guessing it's a Leslie S5T variation.

Again, Walthers product number?

Coupler

The prototype sort of looks like a type H coupler.  But I'm not sure.  If it is, then a Kadee 118 could work.

Other Details

The cab sunshades are a neat touch as is the speed recorder.  I believe both are available in the Details West F unit detail set.  But do these details come separately from other manufactures?

I apologize for asking for the Walthers product numbers as I can search and find these myself.  The big problem is a lack of photos for every detail part, so that makes choosing the right part # extremely difficult.
