The DD is for eight axles, the A is for wide cab, 40 for 40 series, and the X signifies that the unit has a few Dash 2 components. A conventional (not standard because wide cabs are king these days) cab equipped DDA40X would be labeled a DD40X. The Athearn model's prototype was never built(although it was proposed by EMD). It's not a DD35 because it has the 40 style radiator fan setup (three large fans). DD35's have two large fans sandwiching one small fan. In case you've heard enough, I'll quiet myself down now.
