Car identification help
Posted by duiker on Friday, April 13, 2007 8:31 PM

This afternoon I was railfanning in Berea, Ohio when a CSX consist contained several cars of which I have no idea of what they were or what they are used for.  They were black solid high-sided gondolas with a yellow center beam under frame.  The reporting marks were KSIX.  They appeared to be new since they were a shiny black and very little evidence of weathering.

Would appreciate any information that you may be able to provide.  I know I should have had my camera with me, but my bateries were dead.  Thank you in advance for your imput.

 Rudy,

You got me on this one??????  I searched the net and found nothing on these.Shoot I searched online railroad sites and still found nothing .I'm going to lose sleep over this....this kind of stuff bugs me.

I will find out who owns these cars. Are they gondolas or hoppers ? KSIX isn't on any list I've found, nor is it on any other countries list.

There's no railroad with the reporting marks of KSIX showing up on the FRA web site using their search function, so it may be so new that they haven't even gotten it into their database, or maybe the cars were enroute for export to a foreign country?

I find this all very interesting.  These cars did not have opening underneath to unload them.  That is why I called them gondolas.  I didn't mean for you to lose sleep over this.  I could not find the KSIX on any list either.  Thanks for the imput.

My latest ORER is 2000 and there is no KSIX listed then.  The X definitely means private ownership.  A total guess would be Coal hoppers with a rotary coupler on one end for unloading purposes.
